CATHOLIC CHARITIES AT A GLANCE
ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
It all began on 18 April 1979 under the leadership
of the Archbishop, Rev. Henry D’ Souza as a social service wing of the
Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar. The organization started work for the
development of poor, needy, disadvantaged, marginalized people in the State of
Orissa. Catholic Charities, Khurda Road, Jatni Orissa is the diocesan social
service society of the Archdiocese of Cuttack-Bhubaneswar.
It was officially registered on 18-4-1979. As a
registered body it has a memorandum of association and governing body including
the Archbishop as its Chairman. Catholic Charities is working in the field of
micro finance, agriculture, watershed, education and health. Catholic Charities
works primarily with Tribal and dalits and the most vulnerable sections of the
society like; women, children, landless, agriculture laborers and marginal farmers. This organization has
been working for the poor, needy, disadvantaged, down trodden and marginalized
people in the 9 districts of Orissa.
Catholic Charities believes that development needs
to be a process which ensures qualitative improvement in the people’s access,
security and status in their socio-economic, political and physical situations
and the opportunities to live in dignity, freedom and justice. The present
national development plans do not reach the needy so the goals are turned to
realities, thus denying the basic rights of a larger section of the poor and
the marginalized. This results in bringing benefits to only a small section of
the population and to those who enjoy political and administrative patronage.
Appropriate interventions are therefore planned to bring-in alternative sources
for their development and these give priority to their aspirations in meeting
their basic needs.
Presently Catholic Charities works in 9 district of
Odisha addressing the issues of livelihood, governance, Dalit and tribal
rights, emergency response and conflict transformation and peace building.
VISION: Catholic
Charities has the vision to avail equal opportunities for deprived sections,
vulnerable and disaster victims enabling them to be the partners in their
development and exercise their rights on equality, justice and freedom.
MISSION: Our mission is to restore the human dignity of the tribals, dalits and other marginalized communities through a process of empowerment.
